Pediatrics Department
The Pediatric Department at MCU-FDTMF Hospital offers comprehensive and specialized care for children from infancy through adolescence. Our department includes an Outpatient Section, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a Neonatal Care Unit (NCU), and a Community Pediatric Section, catering to a wide range of child health needs. The Outpatient Section handles routine well-baby visits, immunizations, and parental education, along with specialized care in pediatric cardiology, pulmonology, allergology, nephrology, infectious diseases, hematology, and adolescent care.
Our PICU is equipped with the latest technology, staffed by Senior Resident Physician Trainees and guided by Pediatric Intensivists, ensuring the highest level of care for critically ill children. The NCU provides comprehensive services for newborns, including high-risk infant care, with modern facilities and equipment supported by experienced Neonatologists and Pediatric Consultants.
Since its establishment in 1950, our department has been at the forefront of pediatric medicine in the Philippines, committed to providing excellent child healthcare services and fostering the continuous training of medical professionals in pediatric care.

Training Program
• The Pediatrics Residency
The Pediatric Residency Training Program at MCU-FDTMF Hospital, accredited by the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) since 1984, is designed to cultivate the next generation of pediatricians skilled in comprehensive child healthcare. Initiated by Dr. Esperanza Rivera, the program offers an in-depth and diverse educational experience, combining clinical training with academic learning in all major pediatric subspecialties.
• Hands-On
Residents engage in hands-on patient care in our Outpatient Section, PICU, and NCU, under the mentorship of our experienced Pediatric Consultants and Subspecialty Consultants. The training encompasses modern medical practices, community pediatrics, and intensive neonatal and pediatric care, ensuring our residents are well-prepared to address the multifaceted health needs of children.
• Innovation and advocacy in child health
Our program is further enriched by a history of innovation and advocacy in child health, including the establishment of rooming-in practices, adolescent care centers, and breastfeeding support in compliance with national policies. Through continuous accreditation and updates in pediatric education, our residents are assured of a training program that not only meets but exceeds the standards of pediatric healthcare delivery.
